Burdett

The Burdett Neighbourhood Centre in Mile End East provides a wide variety of resident-led activities for the local community, and does this by working in partnerships. There is a neighbourhood nursery attached to the centre run by a voluntary-aided charity called Matchbox.


The centre opened in 1999 and is situated opposite Stebon Primary School. The centre works in partnership with both Stebon Primary and also St PaulÍs Way School, which is the secondary school in the local vicinity.

The Burdett Estate has a diverse team of both Housing and Communities and Neighbourhood (CAN) staff who represent the diversity of the community. The Burdett staff work with local people to provide the right kind of services and activities. It is committed to employing and providing training to local people.

Cafe Reconnect:

In 2003 a new community cafe/young people's centre opened in Mile End East. We worked in partnership with the Leopold Tenants' and Residents' Association to transform an old tenants hall.

During the day it provides affordable, healthy food to people living and working in the area. After school it is open for a young people with structured activities as well as a place to come and relax. There are various facilities including a pool table, computers and games available.
It is also a training facility and through the cafe a number of people have qualified in food hygiene. We plan to run other related courses to give people skills to work in the catering and hospitality industry.
