Youth Empowerment Board
Poplar HARCA was the first social landlord in the country to establish a Youth Empowerment Board. We are dedicated to ensuring young peoples idea's and views are represented at the highest level within the organisation.
The decisions and ideas of the new Youth Empowerment Board will feed into all of Poplar HARCAs existing boards, including the main Board.
Over 30 young people aged 16-25 from the Poplar and Mile End area make up the Youth Empowerment Board, including an elected Chair and Vice Chair.
The Board holds meetings every two months and discusses issues around the following:
- Redevelopment and design of Poplar
- Training and Employment
- Youth facilities and activities
- Housing
- Community safety
Each member of the Board has the opportunity to complete a fully comprehensive training programme to develop their leadership and governance skills.
Sumaia Mashal, member of the Youth Empowerment Board:
"I joined the YEB because for the first time, we're given the chance to actually make a difference as young residents, rather than just young people."
"The Board I am chairing is full of energy, commitment and dedication. I am positive everyone in Poplar will see lots evidence that we have put in 200% to make Poplar a better place to live, work, grow and study".
