Tower Hamlets Burglary by Appointment

07 July 2011
Police are concerned about bogus phone calls.
Police in Tower Hamlets have been made aware of people cold calling Local residents. Callers are claiming to be from a crime prevention company working in conjunction with the Safer Neighbourhoods teams, wishing to arrange a visit to give crime prevention advice.
The callers, mainly female, ask about the householders present home security measures and then offer a consultancy service, which includes a home visit.
These are not legitimate phone calls as police do not operate in this way, we only respond to direct requests.
There is a similar scam in West London where criminals phone elderly residents and make an appointment to buy antiques. Having tricked their way into a home they then steal property.
PC Mark Jones, one of Tower Hamlets Crime Prevention Team, said: ‘There are many ways in which criminals may try to trick you. They are constantly thinking of new scams, so the advice is ‘be aware’. Please remain vigilant, if you are contacted by anyone in the street, at your home, or by phone. If you feel that someone is behaving suspiciously please contact your local Safer Neighbourhoods team - or in an emergency call 999"
