Harris Hawks Put Poplar’s Pigeons in Pecking Order

01 February 2010
Poplar HARCA has employed the specialist skills of mother nature to help control pigeons and the mess they make on estates.

Working with falcon company, Hawkforce, they are piloting Harris Hawks to fly around some of Poplar HARCA Estates to keep a watchful eye on pigeons.

Harris Hawks are quick, intelligent and ideal for flying around urban surroundings in order to scare pigeons away. The idea is to create a no fly zone for pigeons by convincing them that our estates are not a safe place.

Poplar HARCA hopes the Hawks will mean an ends to ugly physical barriers such as spikes and netting and will reduce re-infestation by new birds.

Mark Coleman, Head of Poplar HARCA’s Resident Services said “We are committed to making our estates cleaner and safer. These Hawks has a very successful track record in dealing with the pigeon problem commonly reported  to us by many residents.

The hawks are doing a great job in helping to drive off flocks of pigeons so that they do not settle.  But residents need to help too.  Residents leaving out food encourages pigeons and other vermin  undermines what we’re all trying to achieve.”

Poplar HARCA is piloting this initiative for one year and will be rolling out to all estates if successful.

Residents will get the chance to get up close with the Hawks  at forthcoming “Meet the Birds Day’.   More information on this will be available nearer the time.
