Launch of £100 million regeneration scheme
12 December 2007Residents from East India Estate, will join John Cross, the Chair of the National Housing Federation to celebrate the start of a £100 million regeneration programme and the transfer of their homes to Poplar HARCA on the 14 December 2007.
The East India Estate, which includes the iconic Balfron and Carradale Towers designed by architect Erno Goldfinger, will receive a £100 million cash injection from Poplar HARCA to transform the area, and provide much needed family housing, new landscaped green spaces and community services.
78% of East India residents voted to transfer their homes to Poplar HARCA in November 2006. Over the last year Poplar HARCA has been working closely with Tower Hamlets Council to gain full approval from English Heritage as Balfron Towers and Carradale House are listed buildings.
Steve Stride, Chief Executive of Poplar HARCA, said, “This is a new beginning for the East India area. Work is already underway and a 100 Day Action Plan has begun to make immediate improvements on the estate. We look forward to working with residents on this exciting and ambitious regeneration programme”
John Cross, Chair of the National Housing Federation, who grew up on the East India estate said; “Having grown up on the East India Estate I am delighted to see this area get the investment it needs. Poplar HARCA’s ambitious plans will dramatically improve the quality of life for those people living and working here. All homes will be brought up to the decent homes standards with new kitchens and bathrooms, new larger family homes will be created, as well as a new community centre offering residents essential services.”
