NBA superstars visit Poplar for coaching session

17 October 2008
NBA superstar Vince Carter and a host of his Nets team mates took part in a schools training session at the Barclays Spaces for Sports site at Poplar HARCA's Brabazon Park on the 10 October.

Sixty children aged 11 to 14 were invited by Poplar HARCA and Barclays to participate in the unique coaching session where they received tips and advice from some of the NBA’s biggest stars, followed by a Q&A and autograph session.

Carter was joined at the event by coach Lawrence Frank and several team mates including Ryan Anderson and Jarvis Hayes ahead of the Nets clash against Miami Heat at the O2 Arena on Sunday, 12 October.

The court at Brabazon Park, which is managed in association with Poplar HARCA, was opened in October 2007 as part of the Barclays Spaces for Sports scheme, the single biggest investment in grassroots sport by a private company in the UK.

Babu Bhattacherjee, Head of Communities and Neighbourhoods for Poplar HARCA, said: “The funding from Barclays Spaces for Sports has enabled Poplar HARCA to provide our community and local schools with a first class leisure space. Thanks to spaces like this many of our young people are showing real sporting potential. It has been a fantastic experience for them to receive training and advice from the Nets players.”
