Poplar HARCA evicts old crook for housing fraud
19 January 2010Thanks to residents’ evidence, Poplar HARCA has successfully evicted a tenant for illegally subletting his flat while receiving full housing benefit.
Judge Gregory of Bow County Court branded Mr Miah of 64 Burcham Street an “old crook” for illegally subletting his flat and encouraging a family to live in cramped conditions.
He commented: “The documented evidence shows overwhelmingly that you have been subletting. I hope Housing Benefit will do something about this obvious fraud.”
Mr Miah was ordered to pay £2,454 in fines and the legal costs occurred by Poplar HARCA.
Poplar HARCA was first alerted to the problem in the summer of 2009 when residents complained of noise caused by the family in residence.
After investigating the case Poplar HARCA officers quickly discovered that the flat was being sublet illegally. Poplar HARCA then took immediate action and served Mr Miah with a notice to quit to gain possession of the property.
Kulwant Bhandal Poplar HARCA’s investigating officer said, “The information from our residents enabled Poplar HARCA to take swift action against this benefit fraudster. Not only was he swindling the system he was making an illegal profit by encouraging a family to live in cramped conditions. This case sends a clear message that Poplar HARCA will not tolerate illegal subletting and will act quickly to stamp it out.’
