Poplar residents staying healthy at 50

18 June 2009
A range of activities for older residents in the East India area has been launched by Poplar HARCA.

The over 50’s sessions are taking place across Poplar and have been introduced to encourage residents over the age of 50 to stay fit and healthy and improve their overall wellbeing.

Working in partnership with local organisations, community groups and volunteers, current sessions will be added to over the coming months and July will see the reopening of the Burcham St Centre in Poplar as a focus for over 50’s activities.

The residents have a number of activities that they can benefit from. They are

• Aberfeldy Walking Group – Wednesdays 9.45pm Aberfeldy Centre
• Tai Chi - Mondays 10-11am Teviot Centre
• Beauty Therapy Treatment (please call for more details)
• Lunching Network - third Friday of the month (please call for more details)
• Computer café - Wednesdays 1-3pm Aberfeldy Centre
• Coffee Morning – Fridays 10-12pm Café Reconnect

Jayne Clavering, Community Development Officer at Poplar HARCA said:

“It is a great opportunity for us to work in partnership with local organisations to develop and enhance services for older people in the area. There’s already some great sessions happening with lots more coming soon”

Joseph Hassan, resident on the Brownfield Estate who attends the Computer Café and Tai Chi said:

“I was advised by my GP to exercise and now regularly attend the Tai Chi class. It’s like doing exercise in slow motion and makes me feel calm and strong. I’ve realised that there’s no need to rush and better to do things at my own pace. Now I even practice Tai chi at home’

If you are a Poplar resident and want to get involved in any of these activities, please contact Jayne Clavering on 07957 682 288.
