Poplar youngsters aspiring for the future

17 February 2010
Young people in Poplar have signed up to the Duke of Edinburgh programme and have already raised over £2,875 for their local community.

Young people from The Aberfeldy youth project run by Poplar HARCA have signed up to the award to learn new skills in peer mentoring training, organising activities, and taking part in life skills projects.

The award is achieved by completing a personal development programme in four sections.  Young people can find themselves helping people or the local community, getting fitter, learning and developing new skills, going on an expedition or taking part in a residential activity.

Lisa Bojang, Poplar HARCA’s Youth Co-ordinator said:

“Our small and enthusiastic group are already getting stuck into the principles of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.  The money  they have raised for their local community is being used to buy equipment for Burcham Street’s over 50’s intergenerational gardening project. Congratulations to Conor Jacobs, Peter Scarlett, Jake Sparling Gower and James Lawrence for their work so far.”

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is running at Burcham Street (Thursdays 6-9pm) and the group are looking for like-minded young people to take part. If you are aged 13 – 19 and would like to use your free time and learn something fun & positive, contact Lisa Bojang on 0207 515 6794 or 07957 312768
