Residents’ help needed swinging the demolition ball
26 May 2009Poplar HARCA and the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation have declared that the days are numbered for two derelict housing blocks on the Aberfeldy Estate, in Poplar.
In their prime Currie and Dunkeld House were considered the height of building design and a proud place to live. In a few weeks time, though, a demolition ball will be swinging its way into the two blocks. Both Poplar HARCA and the LTGDC are on the look out for anyone who lived in these blocks when they were first opened in the 1950s, to get the demolition ball rolling.
The demolition will make way for new family homes and community facilities as part of our widespread regeneration of the area.
The demolition is scheduled for a fortnight from now and the desire for Poplar HARCA and the LTGDC is to ensure that community involvement is at the heart of the development.
Peter Andrews, Chief Executive of the LTGDC, said: “Poplar HARCA’s plans for regenerating this estate are as exciting as they are necessary and we had not doubts in supporting them by clearing the site for much needed work to begin. And for an organisation with such deep roots in the local community it seemed fitting that a local resident with memories of living on the estate should get the ball rolling on the new development. I hope that the local media can help us find them in time.”
Steve Stride Chief Executive of Poplar HARCA said;
“The LTGDC is generously contributing more than £600,000 to demolish Currie and Dunkeld House. This funding will enable Poplar HARCA to begin an ambitious regeneration programme which will provide new and affordable family homes for the local community in a safe, green environment. I would be absolutely delighted if a resident pushed the button on this demolition"
