Understanding the digital TV switchover

17 October 2011
From April 2012 we’ll all be watching TV through a Digital signal, rather than an Analogue signal. Read more about it here.

4 April is the date that the London TV region will start the switch to digital TV.

You get a digital signal through either a land-based transmitter such as Crystal Palace, which is called Freeview. Or you get a digital signal through a satellite transmitter, which is called Freesat.

The important thing to remember is the switchover does not mean you need a new television. You can buy either a Freeview receiver or Freesat receiver from many high street shops, which don’t cost very much. Then you plug your receiver into the TV outlet plate (in your lounge) and into the TV, and follow the instructions on the screen.

We recommend a Freesat receiver, because they provide more channels and is less affected by tall buildings, trees and cranes because the signal comes from satellites in Earth’s orbit.

Some blocks don’t have a communal satellite connection so you can’t get Freesat. Please phone Peter Harold on 020 7005 7641 if you are unsure about this or need more information.

If you bought a TV recently it will have either Freeview or Freesat built in. In which case you connect your TV directly to the TV outlet plate.

Digital UK is the not-for-profit company leading the UK’s switchover to digital television. Visit their website for more information www.digitaluk.co.uk

There is a help scheme run by the BBC for everyone who is eligible disabled, aged 75 or over, registered blind or partially sighted or anyone who has lived in a care home for six months or more. The £40 fee includes the necessary equipment, installation and 12-month aftercare with a free helpline.
