Aids and adaptations

We are committed to helping older and disabled people to remain independent in their homes for as long as possible, and to helping relatives and carers to care for them with dignity.

Many of our tenants struggle with normal daily living activities such as climbing steps or stairs, getting in and out of a bath and turning taps. Our technical staff works with occupational therapists to work out what help we can give you and to provide adaptations to your homes to make life easier.

We want to:

  • encourage our staff to find ways of identifying residents who may need extra help;
  • make sure that our policies and procedures are freely available to you so that you know what to do;
  • work with occupational therapists to assess your need for minor adaptations; and
  • help you apply for a grant to help pay for expensive work on your home if occupational therapists decide you need it, and make sure that work is carried out to a high standard.

 What we promise to do for you

Minor work, such as fitting grab rails, lever taps and stair rails.

We will:

  • set aside an amount of money each year to provide minor adaptations;
  • carry out all emergency work within 24 hours of when we find out you need it (this would usually be where someone is leaving hospital and needs the work done for safety reasons);
  • carry out all urgent work within three days of when we find out you need it (this would be for most standard minor items such as grab rails and stair rails);
  • carry out non-urgent work within 28 days; and
  • write to you to let you know when we can provide more specialised equipment if we need to order this specially for you.

Major work (funded by a Disabled Facilities Grant)

We will:

  • work with the occupational therapist after they have assessed your needs to make sure they choose the correct adaptation for your home;]
  • help you apply for a grant within 10 working days from the date of the occupational therapists recommendations;
  • make alterations such as fitting ramps and improving bathrooms within eight weeks of grant funding being approved;
  • do the work that needs specialist equipment, within one week of the equipment being delivered; and
  • keep any work we installed in good repair and service stairlifts, lifts between floors and hoists every six months.

When we refurbish properties

We will:

  • make sure that you have the chance to ask for changes to meet your needs if we carry out major work on your home;
  • arrange for an occupational therapist to visit you and decide what help you need within 15 working days of when we find you need more help;
  • let you know within seven days what help the occupational therapist decided you need;
  • apply for grants for you if you need extra money to pay for equipment or adaptations that the occupational therapist recommended; and
  • let you know what is happening while we carry out the work.
