Teams across Poplar HARCA cultivated a sense of Christmas magic to both old and young in December.

Our Light Switch On at the beginning of the month illuminated Chrisp St Market.  120 Children from across 5 local primary schools entertained hundreds of onlookers as they sang Christmas songs and Carols.  Afterwards children paraded around the market with their home made lanterns before special guest Jim Fitzpatrick MP turned on the festive lights.

A week later on Sat Dec 9, over 400 local children received gifts as Father Christmas landed his sleigh in Chrisp Street market. Outside, real life reindeers grazed and a brass band played carols to the crowd.

Community Choir, The Poplar Singers, held a good old fashioned community sing a long accompanied by mince pies and hot chocolate at Poplar Union community centre.

By Mid-December, 250 excited kids visited Santa’s grotto at the Teviot and Linc community centres.  Happy tots received presents from Mr. Claus and then went on to create festive inspired arts and crafts.

Local resident, Jackie Emin, organised the successful Teviot Christmas Market inside the Teviot Garden.   Funds raised went towards the Teviot After School Club. Over 75 people attended. Fresh potatoes and vegetables were on sale direct from the garden. A perfect accompaniment for that Christmas dinner! Mulled wine, mince pies, hot chocolate and a fun tombola complemented festive spirits.

This same good cheer continued at the Big Local Aberfeldy event on 16 December at nearby St. Nicholas Church.  In the morning, Santa visited the kids where they enjoyed games, music and showed off their design skills creating Christmas cards and decorations.   Later that evening, families and residents enjoyed an evening meal together really honing their community spirit.

Our Elders Lunch is an event that we all look forward to. And on 19th December, Poplar Union played host to 140 older guests. Staff rolled up their sleeves and showcased their culinary skills by cooking up a tasty 3 course meal for everyone.  Local volunteers served and helped make this event special.  Our diners were entertained, enjoyed a two-step and everyone left with chocolatey treat.   Who says Christmas is just for the young!

And finally our Basket Brigade Team delivered 62 food baskets to our vulnerable and elderly residents.  Residents were so grateful.  A further 35 baskets were distributed through the charity Neighbours in Poplar.

Another Christmas may have come and gone – but we hope these feel good memories last.

Happy New Year!
