This is a lovely new opportunity for local people to share their knowledge of fresh Asian ingredients and cookery with others who need a bit of help identifying the more unusual produce available in Chrisp Street Market.

We are looking for two confident and personable home cooks to lead a group of learners around Chrisp Street Market. You will have a good knowledge of all the Asian produce on sale in the market and be able to explain what’s what. The group will purchase vegetables, and together you will make your way to the brand new Limborough Community Kitchen. Here you will demonstrate how to prepare the produce and lead the group to cook vegetarian Asian dishes themselves.

Description of tasks

  • Meet and welcome the group of learners at Chrisp Street Market
  • Explain what the different vegetables are, what they taste like and what they can be used for
  • Explain how to spot the freshest vegetables and what produce is in season
  • Use resources to write easy to follow recipes and ingredient lists
  • Collect money from the group to purchase vegetables
  • Saving and making a record of any leftover money for the next session
  • Leading the group to Limborough Community Kitchen, Limborough House, 25a Thomas Rd, E14 7AW
  • Demonstrate how to prepare the vegetables
  • Lead the group to cook one or two of your vegetarian recipes, cooking in pairs if required. The kitchen has five hobs so the group will have a maximum of 10 learners
  • Follow best practice in food hygiene and share this knowledge to the learners (training can be provided)
  • Lead the group to clean up, leaving the kitchen in the same clean state you found it
  • Plan sessions in advance so we can advertise what recipes will be cooked to encourage participation
  • Create a handy vegetable guide (with our help) for the learners to take home

Time commitment

This is a new project we would like to trial with the aim of running a session every month. The Exploration and Cooking is at a time to suit you, this is likely to work well during a weekday or perhaps on a Saturday morning.

The whole activity will take around 3 hours to complete.
