The Linc Centre offers a broad range of activities and services for local people including exercise, creative, green and social initiatives.

 You will provide a warm welcome to all of our users and visitors, provide information about the centre and encourage people to get involved in our community activities. You will be volunteering closely with staff and other volunteers and be required to carry out a range of administrative support tasks to help maintain an effective and efficient reception and office.


Description of tasks

  • Deal with face to face queries, giving everyone a warm welcome to the centre
  • Answer the phone in a friendly & professional manner, signposting & providing information
  • Take messages and ensuring those messages are passed onto the correct person
  • Ensure visitors sign in and report any accidents or incidents
  • Proactively engage people in conversation, promoting centre activities
  • Create promotional material for the centre
  • To familiarise yourself with our activities so you can speak confidently about what we have to offer
  • Use our database Lamplight to record information
  • To undertake other administrative duties as directed by the office staff
  • Helping to set up tables and chairs in rooms ready for centre activities and classes
  • Join staff in outreaching to local residents to engage them in centre activities.
  • Adhere to all Poplar HARCA policies and procedures.


  • Enthusiasm for community based work
  • Good written and spoken English
  • Confidence and patience when communicating with the general public
  • A friendly, empathetic and calm approach to interacting with others
  • Ability in Microsoft Word, Outlook and the internet – desirable but not essential
  • A ‘can do’ approach, showing initiative and being pro-active
  • Comfortable adapting to changing environments
  • Fluency in a community language, specifically Bengali, is useful but not essential

Ideally we would like you to volunteer for at least 3 hours per week for at least 3 months, however if you are able to commit to six months we believe you would have a much richer volunteering experience. The days we would like you to volunteer are flexible.

  • You will be offered opportunities to attend training relevant to your role and to centre activity
  • You will receive agreed travel expenses, and can claim lunch expenses if you volunteer for more than 5 hours a day
  • We will provide you with an honest reference regardless of how long you are with us
  • We are committed to provide a safe and supportive environment.

All volunteers are required to complete an application form, attend an informal interview and give two referee’s details. You may also be required to undertake a criminal record check which we will pay for. If successful your volunteer role will begin with a 1 month trial period.
