If I could describe the Health Talent Pool Programme in one word it would be “Lifeline”.  As a graduate, I thought I would have my career all planned out. However, as I left university, I wanted a career change and ended up out of employment for months. One thing I was sure of was that I wanted to work within the healthcare sector. As I searched for employment within the NHS, I understood that it was difficult to be considered for administration vacancies as most were advertised internally. This coupled with a lack of work experience made me realise I needed help. This is where the Talent Pool Programme came in.

What I needed were skills and experience that I could apply within the working world, within the NHS. The programme equipped me with qualifications from Health and Safety to Mental Health Awareness. The team at Poplar HARCA worked hard to prepare me with vital skills such as writing a CV, supporting statement for NHS applications and presentation skills. They were there to give me a confidence boost and really built the foundation which I could work upon to gain employment.  

The Public Health Team provided me with a voluntary placement that was suited to me; where I would have the opportunity to build my experience, knowledge of the NHS and demonstrate my abilities. I loved the interaction I had with the patients whilst volunteering which helped me develop my confidence and interpersonal skills. I believe my overall experience has aided in securing my employment.

On my fifth week of volunteering, I was offered the position of Newborn Hearing Screening Programme Administrator. The vital advice and support I received from my voluntary placement manager for the interview also helped secure my employment.

I would recommend others to enrol onto the Talent Pool Programme because it is a fast-track entry into employment within the NHS and gives you access to jobs that you would otherwise not have. I was supported and advised from training to employment. This programme is a lifeline back into employment within a sector I am passionate about and want to progress in. I would love to see this programme continue to do the same for others in the community.
