Civic award winner


Babu Bhattacherjee, our director of community and neighbourhoods, has been awarded for 15 years of work, dedicated to improving local people’s lives.

Tower Hamlets Council’s Civic Awards are given to ‘unsung heroes’ who the borough have recognised as providing outstanding service to our community.

One of the nominations described Babu as ‘passionate about improving people’s quality of life’ and recognised his work to develop community led groups and tackle inequalities.

A special nod was given to his involvement with the Food Pantry on Burdett Estate as well as his work to support capacity building with local, youth-led charity, Leaders in Community.

Steve Stride, our chief executive said:

“Working with those who live and work in Poplar and Bow, to make good things happen for our community, is something Babu has done, every day, for the last 15 years.  He cares deeply about the wellbeing of local people and the opportunities open to them, so this award is incredibly well deserved.”

Another nomination for Babu highlighted his ‘visionary way of thinking’ and his commitment to creating long term, impactful opportunities for the community.’

Babu leads our community and neighbourhoods team which includes our community centres, The Hive, our employment and training service and Spotlight, Poplar HARCA’s award winning creative youth service.
