Works kick-off at Chrisp Street

06/12/2021

One of east London’s biggest transformation schemes is edging ever closer, as construction works begin at Chrisp Street.

The project, which is being delivered by Telford Homes, in partnership with Poplar HARCA, will transform the existing Chrisp Street Market into a thriving new town centre, creating over 600 homes – 200 of which will be affordable – alongside a revitalised Chrisp Street Market.

The new market which will pay homage to the original Chrisp Street Market 1950s design by renowned architect, Frederick Gibbard. It will bring an array of entertainment, shopping and dining options for residents and shoppers to enjoy, including a brand-new supermarket, a cinema, restaurants, retail space, pocket parks and community facilities.

The scheme, which is worth over £300m and will be completed by 2027, is a welcome boost to the local economy as the borough continues its recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, bringing around 500 jobs to Tower Hamlets. A number of apprenticeship opportunities for local people will also be created during the construction period.

The start of works was marked by the beginning of demolition works at Cordelia Street, with the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Cllr John Biggs, alongside shopkeepers, market traders and local residents in attendance.

John Biggs, the Mayor of Tower Hamlets, said:

“This exciting milestone marks the start of the Chrisp Street regeneration, which will bring investment, new homes, shops and business units, plus community facilities to the area. I’ve very pleased to be here today to celebrate this landmark event.”

The scheme’s first community facility has already opened on the site, following the launch of the brand-new Children and Family Centre in September, which was delivered by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, in partnership with Telford Homes and Poplar HARCA.

Jon Di-Stefano, Chief Executive Officer for Telford Homes said:

“We have been eagerly anticipating this moment for some time now, and we’re extremely pleased that we’re finally here. This really is a truly exciting scheme – one that delivers a new destination for east London that we hope the local community in Poplar will be proud of. Alongside a number of much-needed and new affordable homes, we will also be delivering the leisure, entertainment, shopping, dining and community facilities that residents in the local area have been asking for. Alongside this, we are providing vital upgrades to the current market, creating a better working environment for our market traders, while also delivering hundreds of new jobs which will provide a significant boost to the local economy.”

Steve Stride, Chief Executive for Poplar HARCA said:

“The start of the Chrisp Street Market regeneration is incredibly important to Tower Hamlets. The market plays a daily part in community life. With Telford Homes, we are offering support to traders currently working in the market, to continue to trade, during and after regeneration.

We are making sure the development protects our local heritage through the restoration of the market’s historic buildings, including the clock tower. I look forward to the many improvements and new amenities this development will bring to Poplar, none more so than much needed new, affordable homes.”
