IT and Tech Support Volunteer

To support our older and non-tech savvy locals who need help on their devices, we’re holding drop-in sessions every Tuesday or Friday at Bow Brew Cafe. As a volunteer, you’ll be on hand to provide in-person support from organising files to demonstrating how to use assistive software. You should have some experience in the IT sector and be confident in your abilities to support our community members.

Hours: Between 11am – 2pm (we’re flexible) on Tuesday &/or Friday

Description of tasks:

  • Provide in-person or remote technical support to elderly clients for various devices (smartphones, computers, tablets, etc.)
  • Assist with basic troubleshooting, software installations, and device setup
  • Help seniors with managing and organising files, photos, and emails
  • Guide seniors on using assistive technologies or accessibility features on their devices (screen readers, enlarged text, etc.)
  • Troubleshoot and resolve software, hardware, and networking issues
  • Provide recommendations for software updates and device maintenance
  • Maintain clear, empathetic communication with elderly clients, ensuring they feel supported and confident

 

As a volunteer, you will have:

  • Strong knowledge of computer hardware, software, and mobile devices (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android)
  • Experience in providing technical support, particularly to older adults
  • Patience and excellent communication skills, with an empathetic and respectful approach
  • Ability to explain technical concepts in a clear, non-technical manner
  • Knowledge of basic cybersecurity practices and online safety tips for seniors
  • Problem-solving skills and a customer-oriented attitude
  • Experience working with a diverse and multi-cultural community
