Celebrating 4 years of the Lansbury Micro Museum

On Monday 14th October, volunteers, supporters and local people gathered at Launch22 to celebrate 4 years of the Lansbury Micro Museum.

Over the last 4 years, the museum has engaged 3,600+ visitors, held a range of tours, talks and workshops for local schools and community groups, and 3 exhibitions:

  • 2016 to 2017: ‘Neighbourhood Number 9’. Showcased a history of the Lansbury estate from its conception as an ideal neighbourhood in the aftermath of the Second World War, through the impact of modernisation and industrial change, to the plans for population growth over the next decade.
  • 2018: 'Seeing Red'. Celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Representation of the People’s Act, which gave some women over the age of 30 the right to vote. Though suffrage was extended to all women over the age of 21 in 1928, the struggle for equality on a number of social and cultural counts continues. This Micro Museum exhibition displayed posters made by See Red Women’s Workshop, a silk screening collective founded in London 1974 in response to the Women’s Liberation Movement of the time.
  • 2019: 'For the Love of Things'. The Lansbury Micro Museum was transformed into a storehouse of personal treasures, all contributed by East London’s residents. Visitors were able to go behind-the-scenes to explore this creative storehouse and discover how and why objects are collected, cared for, researched and displayed.

What’s happening next?

An art and heritage meeting group is launching in the new year. The group will meet quarterly to discuss ideas for the space.

The Lansbury Micro Museum is a stepping stone to establish a heritage legacy of Poplar. The museum will continue to support local artists, community groups and other museums to introduce cultural and heritage activities to existing and new residents to Poplar.
