Chrispmas Winter Wonderland

On 30th November, Chrisp Street Market was transformed into a Winter Wonderland as MP Jim Fitzpatrick switched on the magical Christmas lights.

Performances from local primary school choirs Bygrove, Lansbury Lawrence, Mayflower and Manorfield kicked off the evening with Christmas carols, before community choir Poplar Singers took to the stage with Christmas classics including Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree and Jingle Bells. At 5pm, the audience flocked to the stage to watch MP Jim Fitzpatrick pull the lever and switch on the Christmas tree and market lights to a huge applause.

Young people from Spotlight centre then wowed the audience with performances of their own original songs and raps. 5-piece Swing band, Palace Avenue Swing, completed the evening with a finale of up-beat Swing numbers.

As well as stage performances, there was festive action throughout the market. Over 500 children went to visit Santa’s Grotto for an early Christmas present or the Elf Workshop for a song and dance with the energetic elves, and parents and children took a skate on the ice rink.

Balloon modellers made Christmas hats for the excited children, whilst roller skating Christmas puddings skated around the market handing out sweets. Circus performers showed off with impressive acrobatics and lights whilst families took photos in the giant nnow globe, and made Christmas cards in the craft tent.

For the adults, there was a craft market with local makers selling their wares – cards, cushions and textiles. Local business Hoagey Bears sold hot chocolate and delicious homemade cookies for all the hungry people at the event.

Local shops also got involved with the festive fun, offering discounts. It was 3 for 2 on a selection of cakes at Premier Bakes, and 4kg of drumsticks free when you bought a whole sheep at Medina Bazar. Many of the deals are still running, so head to the market to bag a discount.

Steve Stride, CEO of Poplar HARCA, said: “Chrisp Street’s Chrispmas event is always hugely popular with local children, and this year was busier than ever. It’s great to see everyone enjoying the festive fun.”
