Chrispmas Winter Wonderland 2019

On 29th November, Chrisp Street Market was transformed into a Winter Wonderland as local people helped Santa Claus and Mama Christmas switch on the magical Christmas lights, for the 14th consecutive year.

Performances from more than 200 pupils from local primary school choirs Bygrove, Lansbury Lawrence, Mayflower, St. Saviours and Manorfield kicked off the evening. Community choir Poplar Singers and Dave and Del then took to the stage with Christmas classics including Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree and Jingle Bells. Coralie and Alayssa, two young people from HARCA’s youth service Spotlight, then wowed the audience with live vocal performances including chart hits and Christmas tunes. The audience cheered as the lever was pulled to switch on the Christmas tree and market lights, creating a magical atmosphere.

As well as stage performances, there was festive action throughout the market. Over 500 children went to visit Santa’s Grotto for an early Christmas present or the Elf Workshop for a song and dance with the Energetic Elves, and parents and children took a skate on the ice rink.

Families took photos in the Giant Snow Globe and made Christmas cards in the craft tent, whilst Balloon Modellers made Christmas hats for the excited children. Roller Skating Christmas Puddings skated around the market handing out sweets to keep the excitement in the market.

For the adults, there was a craft market with local makers selling their wares – cards, baby clothes and textiles. Local shops also got involved with the festive fun, offering discounts. It was £3.50 off a scrumptious margherita pizza at Pizza Room, and 3 for 2 on festive treats from Premier Bakes. Many of the deals are still running, so head to the market to bag a discount.

Steve Stride, CEO of Poplar HARCA, said: “This year’s Chrispmas event was bigger and better than ever, with local people enjoying the festive fun. It was brilliant not only to have Santa Claus in Poplar this year, but Mama Christmas too. My grandson loved it!”

Mama Christmas said: “What a fabulous Poplar welcome and a lovely sight, to see so many people coming together on this November night”.
