Children and Young People’s Workshops Volunteer

Poplar Union is a fully-fledged arts & community centre which was purpose built to showcase and nurture the untapped creativity of Poplar. We provide a communal, social and creative space accessible to all. This role is particularly suited to someone with an interest in working with children or young people and/or workshop facilitation.

As a Children and Young People’s Workshops Volunteer, you’ll support facilitators in running creative workshops, classes and events for children and young people – these could be anything from drama club, craft workshops or family events!

Description of Tasks

  • Supporting the creative delivery of youth workshops alongside professional artists/tutors
  • Creating a fun, supportive and engaging environment for participants
  • Helping prepare the space for workshops, as we as packing down at the end of the session
  • Representing Poplar Union to its visitors, promoting a friendly atmosphere
  • Volunteering alongside other volunteers and member of staff
  • Undertaking any other reasonable duties
  • Adhering to Poplar Union and Poplar HARCA’s policies and procedures

Hours: Flexible, as required for specific events; may need to be available daytime, evening or weekends.


We are looking for lively and committed volunteers who have a genuine interest in working with children and young people and real enthusiasm for our exciting new arts space. In this position we are looking for volunteers to stay with us for at least 6 months.

Training and Support

Volunteers are required to attend an induction training session at the venue prior to commencing their volunteer role. Training will cover all necessary information relating to the role, as well as practical training on the use of specific equipment and how to evacuate the building. We will try our very best to accommodate volunteers with additional support needs.

All volunteers will be required to complete an application form, attend an informal interview and supply two satisfactory character references

Who should we contact in an emergency?
Please provide contact details of two referees who are both willing to provide a character reference. This will involve answering questions on a range of topics from your strengths to areas for development and your time management.

Unfortunately we cannot accept references from family or friends. If possible, at least one referee should know you from work, education or volunteering. There are lots of people suitable to provide references, if you are struggling to think of anyone suitable please get in touch and we can discuss your options.
