Classroom Assistant

Tutors United is on a mission to breakdown barriers in education and enable every child to succeed regardless of their background. TU is a university student based tutoring service, training and employing university students studying English & Maths based degrees to provide affordable private tutoring to pupils from low-income and migrant backgrounds. They are running tutoring sessions at the Linc Centre (Gayton House) and St Paul's Way Centre where we are looking for fabulous volunteers aged 16+ to support primary aged learners.

Poplar HARCA and Tutors United are looking for brilliant volunteer classroom assistants who can assist learners to engage in the lessons and to make the most out of the tutored sessions. 

 

Description of Tasks

  • To assist the lead tutor by supporting the pupils on a 1:1 basis during the lesson
  • To support individuals who may be struggling or under-challenged in order to stretch and encourage them
  • To help in dealing with any behavioural management issues such as: ensuring the group is following the class rules, noise is kept to a minimum, they are listening to instructions carefully
  • To help the tutor in ensuring that all pupils arrive on time and leave the site safely

 

Requirements

This opportunity is ideal for someone to looking increase their experience in a classroom setting, supporting both tutor and pupils alike. We are delighted to be able to extend this opportunity to volunteers between the ages of 16 - 25, please note: all applicants are required to have achieved a grade C or above in GCSE Maths and English. You must be interested in volunteering alongside children and young people and are passionate in helping them progress academically.

 

Commitment

Linc Centre, 70 Fern St, E3 3PR - Mondays 4 - 6pm

St Paul's Way Centre, 83 St Paul's way, E3 4AJ - Tuesdays 4 - 6pm

Each session is comprised of two, one hour classes. You are welcome to apply to support just one of the session if that suits you best. I.e. 4 - 5pm or 5 - 6pm. As the children will get to know you we are keen for applicants who are able to volunteer for at least three months.

All volunteers are required to complete an application form, attend an informal interview and give two referee’s details from whom we will seek character references

This is a partnership role between Tutors United and Poplar HARCA and as such your details will be shared between both organisations

Please provide contact details of two referees who are both willing to provide a character reference. This will involve answering questions on a range of topics from your strengths to areas for development and your time management.

Unfortunately we cannot accept references from family or friends. If possible, at least one referee should know you from work, education or volunteering. There are lots of people suitable to provide references, if you are struggling to think of anyone suitable please get in touch and we can discuss your options.
