Crèche Volunteer

St Paul's Way is one of our newer neighbourhood centres, with trendy decor and modern design. It has a huge range of facilities, including a full IT suite, an art gallery, sound-proof meeting rooms and an expandable multi-purpose hall, all great for hosting different projects and events. It is also home to the Bow Brew café, which serves delicious coffee and food.

To volunteer as part of a team supporting children aged under 5 to discover, learn and have fun in the wonderful crèche.

Description of tasks

  • Support staff in making the creche a welcoming, fun and safe place where children can play and learn in a supportive environment
  • Assist in setting up and clearing away the session, looking after materials and equipment
  • Bring energy and enthusiasm to the session
  • Build good relationships with parents and their toddlers
  • Supervise the space, ensuring equipment is used properly and is safe for children to play with
  • Help to create and lead exciting activities in arts and crafts, games, creative play and more
  • Report any accidents, incidents or any concerns you have about children to crèche staff
  • To fulfil and other duties considered reasonable as directed by staff
  • To adhere to Poplar HARCA’s policies and procedures



We are looking for motivated, energetic and caring volunteers. You will have excellent listening skills and the ability to empathise. As you will build relationships with children it is very important that you are reliable and ideally you will be able to volunteer for at least three months on a regular weekly basis.


Availability: term time only

Mondays 9 – 12.30

Tuesdays 9 – 12.30

Wednesdays 9 – 12.30

Thursdays 9.30 - 11.30 - for a new stay and play session


What can we offer?

  • We aim to provide a meaningful experience for you as a volunteer.
  • You will have a full induction followed by the right training and ongoing support.
  • You will have a named PH Contact and there will be opportunities for regular feedback so you can track your progress and work towards meeting your particular goals.
  • You will be prioritised for any further training we have on offer.
  • You will receive agreed ‘out of pocket’ travel and food expenses (for volunteering of 5 hours or more) with proof of receipts.
  • We will provide you with an honest reference regardless of how long you are with us.
  • We can promise a safe environment without discrimination and a supportive space to be in.

All volunteers will be required to complete an application form, attend an informal interview, supply two satisfactory character references and undertake a criminal record check which we will pay for.

More about you
Who should we contact in an emergency?
Please provide contact details of two referees who are both willing to provide a character reference. This will involve answering questions on a range of topics from your strengths to areas for development and your time management.

Unfortunately we cannot accept references from family or friends. If possible, at least one referee should know you from work, education or volunteering. There are lots of people suitable to provide references, if you are struggling to think of anyone suitable please get in touch and we can discuss your options.
