The Aberfeldy Centre has a range of facilities including a fully equipped IT training suite, a multi-purpose hall, an internet cafe and an outdoor play area with a basketball court. It hosts a range of social and educational groups for children and their parents, including a Playgroup.

You will provide a warm welcome to all of our users and visitors, provide information about the centre and encourage people to get involved in our community activities. You will be volunteering closely with staff and other volunteers and be required to carry out a range of administrative support tasks to help maintain an effective and efficient reception.

Description of tasks
•    Deal with face to face queries, giving everyone a warm welcome t
•    Answer the phone in a friendly & professional manner, signposting & providing information 
•    Take messages and ensuring those messages are passed onto the correct person
•    Ensure visitors sign in and report any accidents or incidents 
•    Proactively engage people in conversations about centre activities 
•    Create promotional material for the centre
•    To familiarise yourself with our activities so you can speak confidently about what we have to offer
•    Carry out simple desk based research to help us reach more people in Poplar
•    Use our database Lamplight to record information
•    To undertake other administrative duties as directed by the office staff
•    Helping to set up tables and chairs in rooms ready for centre activities and classes
•    Adhere to all Poplar HARCA policies and procedures.

•    Enthusiasm for community based work
•    Good written and spoken English 
•    Confident and patient when communicating on the telephone and face to face
•    A friendly, empathetic and calm approach to interacting with others 
•    Ability in Microsoft Word, Outlook and the internet 
•    A ‘can do’ approach, showing initiative and being pro-active 
•    Flexibility and comfortable adapting to changing environments
•    Fluency in a community language, specifically Bengali, is useful but not essential

Ideally we would like you to volunteer for at least 4 hours per week for at least 3 months, however if you are able to commit to six months we believe you would have a much richer volunteering experience. The days we would like you to volunteer are flexible.

•    You will have a full induction followed by ongoing support
•    You will have a named supervisor and opportunities for regular supervision sessions 
•    You will be offered opportunities to attend training relevant to your role and to centre activity, including a chance to attend barista training with one of our partners
•    You will receive agreed travel expenses, and can claim lunch expenses if you volunteer for more than six hours a day 
•    We will provide you with an honest reference regardless of how long you are with us
•    We are committed to provide a safe and supportive environment.

All volunteers are required to complete an application form, attend an informal interview and give two referee’s details. You may also be required to undertake a criminal record check which we will pay for. If successful your volunteer role will begin with a 1 month trial period.

Who should we contact in an emergency?
Please provide contact details of two referees who are both willing to provide a character reference. This will involve answering questions on a range of topics from your strengths to areas for development and your time management.

Unfortunately we cannot accept references from family or friends. If possible, at least one referee should know you from work, education or volunteering. There are lots of people suitable to provide references, if you are struggling to think of anyone suitable please get in touch and we can discuss your options.
