Homework Club Volunteer

The Aberfeldy Centre has a range of facilities including a fully equipped IT training suite, a multi-purpose hall, an internet cafe and an outdoor play area with a basketball court. It hosts a range of social and educational groups for children and their parents, including a Playgroup.

As a Homework Club Volunteer you will support young people in finding information and offer guidance on completing homework. We will provide a quiet space and are looking for volunteers to supervise young people working in a group setting and to provide one-to-one educational support.


Description of Tasks

To supervise young people, ensuring the space and computers are used properly whilst maintaining a welcoming, caring and safe environment

To help young people to read and understand homework tasks, questions and information

To guide young people to find the information they need

To keep record of young people attending the club

To engage with young people with the aim of building a relationship of respect and trust

To work within Harca’s policies and procedures

To maintain a professional, safe and non-judgemental environment for the young people attending the centre and to report any accidents or incidents to centre staff

To fulfil any other duties considered reasonable as directed by your supervisor and centre staff



We are looking for dedicated and supportive volunteers who have a good level of ability in Maths and English and any other subjects you might specialise in. You will have excellent communication skills, patience and the enthusiasm to engage and learn with young people. Ideally you will have experience of providing educational support to young people and have an awareness around their needs.



Homework Club runs every Fridays during term-time from 3.45pm-4.45pm

The role is based at the Aberfeldy Centre, Aberfeldy Street, Aberfeldy Village, E14 0NU

Ideally we would like people to volunteer with us for at least three months

You will have a named supervisor and there will be opportunities for regular feedback so you can track your progress and work towards meeting your particular goals.

You will be prioritised for any further training we have on offer.

You will receive agreed ‘out of pocket’ travel.

We will provide you with an honest reference regardless of how long you are with us.

We can promise a safe environment without discrimination and a supportive space to be in.

Who should we contact in an emergency?
Please provide contact details of two referees who are both willing to provide a character reference. This will involve answering questions on a range of topics from your strengths to areas for development and your time management.

Unfortunately we cannot accept references from family or friends. If possible, at least one referee should know you from work, education or volunteering. There are lots of people suitable to provide references, if you are struggling to think of anyone suitable please get in touch and we can discuss your options.
