Keen and Green Gardeners

Poplar HARCA (Housing and Regeneration Community Association) is a Registered Social Landlord, managing around 9,000 housing units in Poplar. We run many community activities through our network of neighbourhood centres and work with a range of partners to deliver services to local residents. Our aim is to make Poplar a better place to live.

Keen and green? We’re looking for enthusiastic gardeners who would like to tend our organic community gardens. In this role you’ll keep the communal garden area and raised beds tidy, pruned and weeded and generally help us ensure these spaces remain in good condition. You can volunteer on your own or with others and will be guided by our in-house horticultural experts. We welcome experienced gardeners seeking an outlet for their skills or people with little garden knowledge who fancy doing something healthy and fun.

By volunteering with us you will also have the chance to take part in relevant training and be supported to attain your volunteering goals.


Description of tasks

  • Under the guidance of our horticulturalist, regularly visit the Bow Brew raised beds, Limborough Gardens and Linc Centre Patch to tend the communal areas
  • Carry out a range of garden/ plant maintenance tasks such as mowing the lawn,  weeding the wild flower garden and pruning plants
  • Report any garden issues to your Poplar HARCA contact person
  • Adhere to all Poplar HARCA policies and procedures.



  • An interest in organic gardening and food growing
  • Happy to carry out tasks requiring some physical exertion (bending, lifting etc.) 
  • A friendly and calm approach to interacting with others.


Ideally we would like you to volunteer for a few hours a week for at least 3 months. Days and times are negotiable and include evenings and weekends.


What can we offer?

  • You will have a full induction followed by ongoing support
  • You will have a named contact and opportunities for regular support sessions
  • You will be offered opportunities to attend training relevant to your role and to our work generally, including a chance to attend barista training with one of our partners
  • Volunteers who are unemployed will also be able to access training from our Employment and Training team on topics such as Awareness of Mental Health Problems, Business Administration and Customer Service. You will also be able to receive employability support including a CV review and help to apply for jobs.
  • You will receive agreed travel expenses, and can claim lunch expenses if you volunteer for more than six hours a day
  • We will provide you with an honest reference regardless of how long you are with us


All volunteers are required to complete an application form, attend an informal interview and give two referees’ details. If successful your volunteer role will begin with a 1 month trial period.

Who should we contact in an emergency?
Please provide contact details of two referees who are both willing to provide a character reference. This will involve answering questions on a range of topics from your strengths to areas for development and your time management.

Unfortunately we cannot accept references from family or friends. If possible, at least one referee should know you from work, education or volunteering. There are lots of people suitable to provide references, if you are struggling to think of anyone suitable please get in touch and we can discuss your options.
