Receptionist Volunteer

Poplar HARCA (Housing and Regeneration Community Association) is a Registered Social Landlord, managing around 9,000 housing units in Poplar. We run many community activities through our network of neighbourhood centres and work with a range of partners to deliver services to local residents. Our aim is to make Poplar a better place to live.

An exciting opportunity to become a volunteer receptionist as part of our Employment & Training team.

The Role

To receive guests to our service and act as the first point of contact for clients visiting advisors or other members of staff.

Provide visitors with basic information required, or redirect them to other local services. 

Description of tasks

  • To be at reception and receive visitors and attend to their enquiries
  • To complete sign in sheets with all visitors
  • To complete registers with visitors attending training programmes
  • To assist with photocopying and scanning of documents
  • To assist with disseminating certificates to learners who have completed training courses
  • To answer telephone calls as required
  • Adhere to all Poplar HARCA policies and procedures.

  • You will like to help people and learn more about what services are available locally to re-direct appropriately

          Two shifts per week on either Monday and Tuesday or Wednesday and Thursday between 8am - 5pm.


Ideally we would like you to volunteer for at least 3 months but we believe that if you are available to volunteer for 6 months you will have a much richer volunteering experience.

  • You will receive agreed travel expenses, and can claim lunch expenses if you volunteer for more than five hours a day
  • We will provide you with an honest reference regardless of how long you are with us
  • We are committed to provide a safe and supportive environment.
  • All volunteers will be required to undertake an informal interview, possibly undergo an Enhanced DBS check (we will pay for this) and to supply two satisfactory references.

Who should we contact in an emergency?
Please provide contact details of two referees who are both willing to provide a character reference. This will involve answering questions on a range of topics from your strengths to areas for development and your time management.

Unfortunately we cannot accept references from family or friends. If possible, at least one referee should know you from work, education or volunteering. There are lots of people suitable to provide references, if you are struggling to think of anyone suitable please get in touch and we can discuss your options.
