Smart home devices: “A handy thing to have in your home… you hardly know it’s there!”

03/07/2023

You don’t need to be a technical wiz to use smart home devices, and you don’t have to live in a home that gets damp to benefit from them.

They don’t take long to fit, and they won’t listen in on you either.

Here, Coventry Cross resident Fran helps us clear up some smart home myths…

Fran has lived at Coventry Cross for decades – it’s her little corner of the world. She knows her home is in a “good, sturdy building” and she’s always been proactive about looking after it. Fran’s not great with technology, but she is a fan of her smart home device.

“In general, I think it’s a really handy thing to have, especially as they’re not big boxes on the wall… you hardly notice it’s there,” she says.

“I found it really easy to get to grips with and I’m a bit of a technophobe…”

Fran got her devices installed a few years ago as part of a check-up on her electrics. It was done quickly, without anyone getting in her way – and just like that, she was set up with everything she needed including the smart home app. So how does it help?

“I can quickly go into the app, read the environmental info, spot which rooms aren’t happy and hopefully do something about it.”

And what if something goes wrong or is difficult to understand?

“I found it really easy to get to grips with and I’m a bit of a technophobe…”

So, it’s easy to install, and easy to use – but does Fran ever worry about what the devices are monitoring?

“It doesn’t listen to you, it can’t hear you, it can’t see you… it’s basically a modern-day thermometer! I would say to anyone, don’t be worried by it, don’t be afraid of it. It’s a very benign little thing that sits in the corner of your room and helps monitor your home.”

All tenants will receive devices when they get their next five-yearly electrical safety test. When yours is due, we’ll contact you with more information.
