Max swaps rented house-shares for his own home through shared ownership

Max, a chartered accountant working for an insurance company in the City, moved into his first home in October 2019. He was living in rented house-shares for nearly 10 years and throughout this time dreamed of owning his own flat. With limited savings, the shared ownership scheme was the best option for him.

What did you know about shared ownership before you bought your home?

When I decided to buy my own flat, my friends recommended me to consider this scheme. I think it works very well for people who have limited savings like me. It gives you options to buy the shares later. I checked the website Right Move and found out that there were lots of options available.

Why did you choose to buy a shared ownership property?

After sharing flats with others for many years, I decided to live by myself last year. In London, renting a single bedroom flat is very expensive and also is not a good investment decision. However, my savings were limited. Hence the shared ownership scheme is the best option for me.

What impact has having your new home had on your day to day life?

It is incredible to have your own flat and the location is wonderful. It is so convenient. It is next to the DLR station and my daily commute time is just one hour, which is a luxury for a City worker. Also, the supermarkets are within 5 minutes’ walk.

What is your favourite thing about your new home?

It is really convenient and close to Central London. At the same time, it is very quiet in the evening.

What do you think about the local area?

Poplar is a great area to live in London. There are lots of local parks and supermarkets. It is also closely linked to key areas of London, like Canary Wharf and Stratford.

Before I bought this flat, I lived in Poplar and really like the community. I also rented with Poplar HARCA, which is a nice coincidence! After I found out that Poplar HARCA had a few properties available in this area, I contacted the Poplar HARCA sales team.

Have you got to know any of your neighbours?

Yes! People are nice. During the COVID-19 lockdown period, I meet quite a few neighbours in my balcony when I enjoy the sunshine.

Have you got any tips for someone who is considering buying a shared ownership property?

Do a lot of research and don’t be afraid to ask questions. There is lots of useful information on the internet.
