New same-day shopping delivery service launches in Chrisp Street

17/01/2022

Shopping trips to Chrisp Street Market in Poplar are about to get a whole lot easier with the launch of a new eco-friendly delivery service later this month.

The innovative cargo bike delivery service from Zedify will allow customers of Chrisp Street Market and the surrounding area to have their shopping delivered straight to their door.

Zedify is working in partnership with us and Tower Hamlets Council to run a pilot project, named Chrisp Street Delivers. Its aim is to support local businesses and traders so they can continue to serve their customers during the redevelopment of the market. As Zedify’s service prevents the need for van and car trips, it will also improve local air quality and reduce CO2 emissions.

Tomos from Zedify prepares orders from Chrisp Street Market retailers. From groceries to furniture, and cakes to steaks, Zedify can lighten the load for shoppers by delivering a range of different goods safely to their front door.

Chrisp Street Delivers will launch on 24 January to help customers with bulky items or larger shopping trips when the Co-op car park closes at the end of the month. Rather than struggling to carry shopping home or hoist it onto the bus, customers can ask their favourite shops and market traders if they’re able deliver their purchases directly to their home. Participating retailers will then book a delivery slot at a time that suits the shopper.

All independent businesses in Chrisp Street Market are currently eligible for 50 free deliveries as part of Zedify’s pilot offer. Those interested can find out more by emailing csd@zedify.co.uk.

“With the Co-op car park closing soon, we’re delighted to still be able to serve our loyal customers with the help of Zedify. Chrisp Street Market traders are really excited about this new venture, which will also help to make Tower Hamlets more environmentally friendly by supplying shoppers with a ‘green’ delivery service.”

Chrisp Street Delivers is jointly funded by London Borough of Tower Hamlets and the Greater London Authority as part of the Business Low Emission Neighbourhood programme, which aims to improve air quality whilst supporting local businesses.

John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, says:

“Tower Hamlets is home to so many wonderful markets that serve their local communities, including Chrisp Street Market. As a Council, we are always looking for ways to support our local economy and I’m glad that we’re able to provide this investment in Chrisp Street Delivers which will enable residents and shoppers to access participating market traders and shops with zero emissions cycle deliveries.”

“Our zero-emission electric cargo bikes are better for the environment than cars and vans. They also help to cut congestion and create safer streets, all whilst enabling residents to shop local with convenient home deliveries, straight to the doorstep!”

Works for the Chrisp Street regeneration, led by Telford Homes in partnership with Poplar HARCA, began at the end of 2021. Chrisp Street Market will remain open for business throughout the development which will transform the area into a thriving town centre hub, creating over 600 new homes, including 200 affordable homes, and a revitalised Chrisp Street Market.
