Creating connections for children with special educational needs and disabilities

24/02/2023

Launched late last year by a local teaching assistant and parent, the new weekend club at the Linc centre brings children with SEND (special education needs and disabilities) and their families together to enjoy an array of creative activities in an all-inclusive environment.

With funding to provide specialist educators, including Poplar artist Sharmin Mow, children can enjoy an array of creative activities in an all-inclusive environment.

Children have been working with Sharmin on a community-themed art project, using paint, crochet and collage and will see their work displayed as a micro-exhibition.

Their artwork will be available from 19 February 2023 at the Linc Centre.

Sharmin, artist and facilitator, said, “Being involved with this project has been a wonderful way to connect my local community.”

The club will expand its activities to include physical exercise programmes, gardening, and helping develop a sensory garden.

Maryam, mum and service user, said, ‘It can be a struggle finding things for us all to do at the weekend. It has been a lovely way for all siblings to spend quality time together and for me to connect with other mums with similar experiences. It’s been an invaluable support.’

The weekend club is part of a broader offer of SEND–only activities available to the community.
