ITV News reports on Aberfeldy Street's eye-catching makeover

25/08/2020

Inspired by the Bangladeshi community, the colourful makeover on Aberfeldy Street is intended to celebrate local diversity and recognise the area's history.

It is hoped the recent transformation will encourage new customers to the street and provide a space where neighbours can get together once again, in the wake of the pandemic.

Shop owner Abdul Salam Sheikh, who features in the report, talks about how new customers would not only benefit his business but everyone in the area.

Local business, The People Speak, share too why they feel the high street is especially important since lockdown.

Aberfeldy Street sits within the Aberfeldy Village regeneration area, a joint venture between Poplar HARCA and EcoWorld London. We are working with Meanwhile Space CIC , Jan Kattein Architects and the London Mural Company to ensure the high street remains a vibrant community, social and commerical hub while the regeneration takes place.

"It's important we don't abandon the High Street to shop online. These are the hubs of community they are places people can meet, talk and have interaction with neighbours. For many people in the area that is so important."
