Fit, feisty and championing for change

22/02/2023

Go-getting local community group, Fit and Feisty, have made access to the Teviot Centre safer and easier for everyone.

The group are behind a new drop kerb, road markings and new parking restrictions which have improved public access to the centre.

The new drop kerb means wheelchair and mobility scooter users and those with pushchairs now have a quicker, safer route. New sloping from the pavement to the road means people no longer need to step off the kerb to enter the Teviot Centre. Road markings and new parking restrictions prioritises the space at the front of the centre for those who need it.

Crissy Townsend, of Fit and Feisty and the Teviot Action Group (TAG) explained:

‘We only had one drop kerb outside the centre. Those who struggle with mobility had to walk right to the end of the street, and cross over to get in. We wanted to make things easier for them.’

‘The changes have a big impact, it’s now much safer for everyone coming to the centre.’

Fit and Feisty worked closely with us, and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, to make the improvements happen.

Improved access to the Teviot Centre is just one of the positive changes to the Teviot estate being led by the local community. Crissy plays a key role, working with a group of dedicated Teviot residents, in developing future regeneration plans for the Teviot estate.

Crissy says:

‘We are doing our bit to make sure the regeneration happens. It’s been a long time coming and it our aim to make sure benefits everyone. I want regeneration to bring us a new community centre, a place that Fit and Feisty can call our own.

I want to make the group bigger and better, and invite more people to join.’

Fit and Feisty is for local people aged 50 years plus, and was set up in the pandemic to help reduce isolation, through socialising and getting active.

A Teviot resident of 40 years said about the group:

‘The group helps me enjoy life and improve my wellbeing. Our fitness instructor Victor has been an inspiration and gives me a good boost.’
