Mohammed
Mohammed is 20 and lives in Tower Hamlets. He took part in Healthcare Horizons, a programme that combines accredited and unaccredited training and gives participants access to internal apprenticeships within the NHS.
“I’d been unemployed for about 5 months, having left University in April, and was unsure about my next steps. I’d had to leave University during my second year to become a full time carer for my dad. I also look after two other people in my family with disabilities. On top of this, I was battling with depression, and didn’t know what I wanted to do or how to properly apply for jobs.
I knew I wanted to get into healthcare. I’m very passionate about the NHS – my family and myself have been service users, and have always heard good things about it. This programme and the qualification itself looked like a great opportunity to get my foot in the door.
The qualification really boosted my self esteem, confidence, and reinforced what I want to do with myself. The workbook increased my knowledge, and it was great to learn more about NHS practices and legislation. I’ve learnt so much more about the field, and it’s made me more determined to have a career in healthcare!
The group was really good, and I’ve made some great friends. I was also given appointments with Rahela, one of The Hive’s Employment Advisors. She’s offered me loads of support with my supporting statement, interview preparation, and job search. Thanks to her, my CV is tailored to healthcare and I am able to write supporting statements that apply to individual jobs.
The support I received from everyone has been phenomenal. I have had so much support to complete the workbooks, improve my career prospects, and even when I just needed someone to talk to. The programme has really helped to expand my knowledge of the NHS and boosted my self-confidence, which was previously really poor. The ongoing support even post-training has made a huge difference to my life. The whole team at The Hive have had such a positive impact on my life and increased my employment prospects.
I have completed my qualification in Common Health Conditions, and it’s great to put that on my CV. I’m now starting a work placement in Royal London Hospital, which I’m super excited about and hope to progress onto an apprenticeship soon! This wouldn’t be possible for me without the support of The Hive.”
