What was your experience before joining us?

I had been unemployed for about 3 years, raising my children and caring for my husband. During the pandemic, I felt lonely and isolated and also saw how my family members were struggling with similar things and their own mental health. I wanted to undertake a course like Mental Health First Aid as it would enable me to understand myself, help people in my life, and use the knowledge I’d gained for future work.

What support did you receive from us?

The tutors on the course were amazing. They were really good at explaining everything and made sure that everyone understood what they were saying.

The training team were aware of my responsibilities outside of training as I am the primary caregiver for my children and also have caring responsibilities for my husband. They were incredibly supportive to me, providing constant contact via email to make sure I was getting on ok and were there if I had any questions.

Where are you now?

I understand people’s issues much better now and can confidently provide suggestions and advice to people who are struggling. My skills, knowledge and confidence have improved thanks to studying with the Hive and I feel like I’ve gained a better understanding of my own experiences and feelings. I have learnt a lot from the course like how to help mental health problems and prevent issues from occurring. This knowledge helps me with my own children and will also help me in the future.

The training team put me forward for an ESOL teaching assistant which I am really excited to start soon! I want to become a teacher in the future, so this course and experience will help me so much.
