Patrick had a background in intensive healthcare for 12 years. He had demanding jobs, and loved it. Unfortunately, he developed neurological symptoms which took 3 years to be diagnosed. During these three years he wasn’t working. He became depressed, suicidal, had no money, no confidence, and couldn’t see any way how he could return to his previous lifestyle when he couldn’t even get on the tube.

His life has turned around since then, however. Patrick applied through Workpath and got onto the 50+ programme, a programme run by Workpath with training and employment support provided by The Hive, Poplar HARCA’s Employment & Training department.

With the support of The Hive and Workpath, he’s studied Business Administration and Safeguarding and Prevent and has been able to start a 6 month work placement, all designed to boost his employability, skills and confidence.

“The programme has really turned my whole outlook around, and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity. I didn’t know what I could do, before this, and didn’t know what I could study.” Patrick said.

“I’ve absolutely loved studying and working at the same time. The teaching methods have been great, and I’ve loved seeing other people’s approaches. Riaz has been a brilliant IT teacher, and the standard of the teachers is fantastic.

“Getting up in the morning to go to work is great, especially when you have been out of work for a long time. I’m really enjoying my work placement. It’s definitely helped me get my confidence back. Now I feel like I’m sleeping regularly, eating regularly, my mobility has become a lot better and my blood pressure has even gone back to normal!

“I’ve made friends within the programme, and it’s really good to see that I’m not the only one in my 50s who might be having health problems or money troubles.

I’m really grateful for the whole thing.”
