100-year-old George has lived in Poplar all his life

25/11/2024

“I get along with everyone,” says George Wood, one of our longest living residents. George recently celebrated his 100th birthday, surrounded by family, friends, and neighbours who came together to honour his remarkable life.

Growing up in Poplar

George grew up on Barchester Street near Langdon Park, where he shared a modest flat with his family. Life in those days was hard, with no running water and a lingering “franzy” smell, but George’s childhood was full of happiness. His cousin Alfred remembers him as the entertainer of the family, putting on shows and even pretending to be a vicar, marrying his friends in mock ceremonies.

A real show-person, George fell in love with theatre at a young age. He fondly remembers joining Miss Lovell’s local dancing class and playing piano at the All Saints Church in Poplar, where locals would get together to waltz, quickstep and foxtrot.

“My daughter says it’s me dancing that’s kept me looking younger.”

A commitment to the local community

As a young man, George served during World War II. After the war, he returned to Poplar and began a new chapter, working various jobs across the borough. From bartending at local pubs like The Builder’s Arms and The Gin Palace to roles in social services, George has always been committed to his community and well-respected by those around him.

Over the years, George rubbed shoulders with some of the local icons, including EastEnders star-studded cast – Bradley Walsh, Barbara Wilson, June Brown and Pam St Clement, to name a few. He remained kind-hearted, always caring for those around him.

That’s how he first crossed paths with Dave Tull, our Engagement Manager.

“George used to look after a tenant in this block, Irene Storer. He used to check in with Irene, and we were supporting her.”

How HARCA is supporting George

Our Safeguarding team provides support for tenants with special needs and those who may be at risk. Working with local organisation Neighbours in Poplar, Dave has been there to help George in his day-to-day, delivering hot meals and making sure his home is healthy and warm.

George’s always said he likes to be around “nice people,” and it’s clear that his kindness has earned him many friends.

His advice for life is simple: “Be nice.” Now, with the support of his family, friends and carers, George still manages to bring joy to those around him.
