Lifts are very important in our community. Many people rely on them to move up and down in their building every day - especially older residents, people with disabilities, and parents with buggies.
But when the lifts aren’t used properly, they can break down. And it can sometimes take a long time to fix them, which causes problems for everyone.
So, we’re reminding all residents and visitors to please be careful when using the lifts.
How do the lifts get damaged?
Here are the most common ways lifts get damaged:
- Holding the doors open
This often happens when people are carrying things or waiting for someone. But holding the doors open can break them and cause the lift to stop working. - Misusing the lift
This includes things like kicking the doors, pressing buttons too hard, or messing with the lift’s safety systems. This can be dangerous and often needs a specialist to fix it. - Too much weight
Putting heavy furniture or lots of items in the lift can make it break down. Lifts have a weight limit, and going over it can cause damage.
Why does it matter?
When a lift is broken, it can take time to fix – especially if special parts or engineers are needed. This can be very hard for people who need the lift to get in and out of their home.
We want to make sure lifts are working for everyone, as much as possible.
What can you do?
To help keep the lifts working for everyone:
- don’t hold or force the doors open
- don’t overload the lift with heavy things
- don’t damage or mess with the lift controls
Please also make sure your visitors do the same. If you see any damage to a lift, report it straight away on 0800 035 1991.
