Joyce: mother, mentor, and community advocate

24/10/2024

For Black History Month, we spoke to one of our most inspiring residents: Joyce. Originally from the beautiful island of Saint Kitts in the Caribbean, Joyce is a mother, foster carer, former special needs teacher, and a force of creativity and compassion. She is making waves as a local fashion designer, a Carbon Champion, and sewing teacher at the Linc Centre.

Giving back

Joyce’s journey has always been about giving back, and that spirit shines through her work. After retiring over 18 years ago from her job as a special needs teacher, she dedicated herself to supporting her community.

As a foster carer, Joyce has opened her heart and home to children, “When you retire, no one tells you what to do. I was miserable at first, but then I found my way,” Joyce reflects. That ‘way’ led her to become involved in everything from teaching people how to sew, to helping make our planet a better place through her work as a Carbon Champion.

Passion for sustainability

Joyce is passionate about sustainability. She upcycles materials, turning them into beautiful creations.

“I like African fabrics. And I love finding something old and making it new again. It’s all about recycling, reusing, and creating something unique.”

Joyce

Her talent extends beyond her own wardrobe. Joyce designs outfits for others, with her sewing students benefiting from her years of expertise and patience. “I tell my students, ‘Remember, your clothes are made for Harrods.’”

Joyce spoke about how she got her classes up and running at the centre. First she enquired about putting on classes and shared the idea with our centre staff. We listened to her. Then, she interviewed and got the role!

Our carbon champion

As a Carbon Champion, Joyce works to encourage green projects in the community – from planting seeds to educating people on sustainable living. “I love plants,” she says.

“We’ve given out sunflower seeds and flower seeds, teaching people to grow their own little gardens, even on their balconies. It’s about helping the environment and making the world a greener place.”

Community commitment

But that’s not all. Joyce is also involved with St Joseph’s Hospice, demonstrating her deep commitment to community empowerment and care. Her role as a foster carer has been a big part of her life’s mission of giving back, offering children stability and a loving home. “It’s rewarding when you meet new people, help them, and see the change you’ve made.”

Passion for fashion

Joyce loves fashion. “I’ve always loved sewing,” she shares. “It’s therapeutic for me, and I enjoy making something no one else has. Seeing someone wear something I made and love it, that’s priceless.” From designing outfits to teaching others, it’s clear that Joyce cherishes making people happy.

Celebrating Joyce and community champions

As we celebrate Black History Month, let’s take a moment to honour Joyce and all the other community champions like her, whose work and dedication continue to uplift and inspire us all.
