One winner, four incredible stories

24/06/2026

We had plenty to celebrate at this year’s Women in Housing and Housing Heroes Awards. Terri, one of our team, was named Inclusion Champion of the Year, while two more team members and our Estate Services team were also award finalists.

Terri scooped the top award for her work leading Oar & Explore, a pioneering all‑women boat club that’s breaking down barriers to water sports in Poplar. Supporting more than 120 women, many from Muslim and global majority backgrounds, the project has opened up east London’s waterways in a way that is safe, inclusive and shaped around participants’ lives.

From female‑only instruction and culturally appropriate provision to sessions that work around childcare and religious commitments, every detail has been designed to make participation genuinely accessible. The result? A thriving community where women who once felt sport wasn’t “for them” are now building confidence, forming friendships – and even qualifying as instructors.

The award judges said:

“Terri has engaged marginalised ethnic minority women from disadvantaged communities and given them access to sport, improving their fitness, health and well-being. You can sense the passion and drive she has put into these projects.”

Terri’s impact goes beyond the water, with her inclusive approach also shaping wider wellbeing programmes, including our cycling initiatives that are opening up access, skills and confidence for families in Tower Hamlets.

It wasn’t just a night for Terri though. Two more of our incredible colleagues, Hattie Hussein and Lisa Lewis, plus our Estate Services team showed the depth of talent and commitment of people across HARCA.

Hattie: Leading the way in building safety

Hattie, shortlisted for Women of the Future, is one of our rising stars who has rapidly progressed from graduate trainee to Building Safety Manager, now responsible for 22 high‑rise buildings. Alongside delivering complex projects and leading on safety and compliance, she brings empathy, professionalism and a strong resident focus to everything she does, whether supporting households who need extra support or improving how services respond to issues like damp and mould.

Lisa: Putting people first

Lisa, a finalist for Inspirational Leader of the Year, is known for her hands‑on, people‑first leadership style. Leading our contact centre, one of our busiest frontline services, she’s inspired her team to step into leadership roles, supported them through challenges and driven improvements that put residents first. From mentoring future leaders to shaping major service changes, her impact is felt well beyond her own team.

Estate Services: Safe, clean estates

Our Estate Services team, finalists for Team of the Year, deliver the day‑to‑day services that keep estates safe, clean and welcoming. Working across thousands of homes, their impact is both visible and far‑reaching.

From inspections and emergency response to supporting residents in moments of real need. The team’s has built strong relationships with residents, creating a shared sense of trust, pride and community.

We’re extremely proud of Terri, Hattie, Lisa and our Estate Services team for representing their outstanding work on a national stage.
