CIH Level 2 Certificate in Housing Practice

Gain the foundational knowledge and understanding required to begin a career in the housing sector and progress on to higher qualifications.

Course overview 

This qualification will provide you with some of the foundational knowledge and understanding required to begin a career in the housing sector and progress on to higher qualifications. The Social Housing (Regulation) Act now requires all senior managers and executives in housing to hold a professional housing qualification.

If you are new to studying or haven’t studied for a long time, a Level 2 qualification is a good place to begin. 

Delivery style: lessons are delivered online and the course is assessed through written assessments.

Cost: FREE

 

Eligibility:  

  • Be 19 or over as of the 31st of August 2026 
  • Be living in London 
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK 
  • Not be in full time education 
  • Be unemployed or on a low income (earning below £28,860)
  • Not be here on a skilled worker, sponsored or a student visa 
  • Score at least a high Level 1 on an English assessment 
  • Have a basic understanding of housing issues, the housing sector etc 
  • Have a desire to work in housing/progress in housing 

Studying with The Hive 

We are a CIH approved study centre and have been delivering accredited training courses and employment support for over 20 years. We are part of a Housing Association, Poplar Housing and Regeneration Community Association. 

Our courses are delivered by professional tutors, who are supported by a team of dedicated staff that work to understand your individual goals, barriers to learning, and support needs to ensure you get the most out of your learning. During and after the course, you will be able to work with one of our qualified employment advisors to support your career progression or entry into housing. 

 

Who is this qualification for? 

  • People not currently working in housing but looking to work in the field or in frontline positions, including people volunteering in housing. 
  • People new to working in housing or a frontline position who want to improve their general understanding of housing. 
  • People working in housing who want to gain an initial qualification before working their way up to a Level 3. 

 

Career pathways/next steps: 

  • This qualification will prepare you for the Level 3 Certificate in Housing Practice. On completion of the Level 3 certificate, you can become a certified practitioner member of CIH.  

 

Delivery style: 

This qualification is delivered through combination of online lesson-based learning and 1 to 1 support with a tutor.

Each unit will be delivered over a day in a tutor led group, after which the tutor will give you a deadline to complete the work using the course materials provided, independent research and 1 to 1 support from the tutor.  

 

You’ll learn:  

Housing Provision and Housing Organisations  

This unit aims to give learners an understanding of housing provision, the relationships between landlords and tenants, and the work, regulatory, and funding systems of housing associations.  

Assessed via: one written assessment. 

 

Customer Service in Housing 

This unit aims to provide learners with an understanding of customer service. It will teach learners about the diverse range and needs of housing customers and the principles of equality and diversity. 

Assessed via: one written assessment. 

 

Asset, Repairs and Maintenance  

This unit aims to give learners an understanding of housing stock, asset management for housing organisations, and managing repairs and maintenance. 

Assessed via: one written assessment.  

 

Professional Development in Housing 

This unit aims to give learners an understanding of paid and voluntary roles within the housing sector and the knowledge, skills and behaviours these roles require. Learners will develop their ability to plan personal professional development.  

Assessed via: one written assessment.
