What is domestic abuse?
Domestic abuse is any incident or pattern of controlling, coercive, threatening, violent or abusive behaviour between people aged 16 or over who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members.
It can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, or background.
Domestic abuse is not always physical. It can include:
- Emotional or psychological abuse – intimidation, humiliation, isolation, or controlling behaviour
- Coercive control – monitoring your movements, restricting access to money, or controlling who you see
- Financial abuse – taking or controlling your money or preventing you from working
- Physical violence – hitting, slapping, pushing, or any form of physical harm
- Sexual abuse – any unwanted sexual contact or behaviour
- Digital abuse – using phones or technology to harass, control, or track you
