A new pontoon brings Limehouse Cut to life

10/02/2026

Last week, local groups, Councillors and partners gathered with the local community to celebrate the opening of a brand new pontoon on the Limehouse Cut.

This new, piece of infrastructure has been made possible by the support of by the London Marathon Foundation and Teviot Regeneration LLP- our partnership with The Hill Group. This new gateway to the water is an early benefit of the exciting Teviot regeneration scheme.

A space designed for the community

For many, this isn’t just about stepping onto a boat- it’s about confidence, connection and belonging.

Naseema, Chair of local women’s boat club Oar & Explore, explained how much this new space means to her community:

“Our dream is for community access to the Limehouse Cut to grow and remain inclusive… The new pontoon will support this by bringing more local people together to build confidence, learn new skills, and feel at home on the water.”

From kayaking sessions to simple moments spent by the canal, the pontoon opens the door to new experiences — especially for anyone trying water activities for the first time.

It also helps strengthen partnerships between local groups, encouraging more people of all ages to get involved and spend time outdoors.

Newly planted reed beds around the pontoon will boost biodiversity too, giving wildlife more space to thrive.

Regeneration delivering real benefits now

The Teviot regeneration will deliver over 1,900 new homes — but its impact is already being felt. For partners like The Hill Group, this early milestone shows what’s possible when regeneration puts community first.

Dan Massie, Development Director at The Hill Group, shared:

“This pontoon is a fantastic example of how regeneration can deliver meaningful benefits from the outset… we remain committed to creating places that have a lasting positive impact.”

Working together for Teviot

Collaboration has been at the heart of this project — and the celebration showed exactly what can happen when residents, partners and local leaders come together.

Lutfur Rahman, Executive Mayor of Tower Hamlets, added:

“The pontoon is one of the early benefits already being realised… exactly the kind of environment where residents can flourish and socialise.”

What’s next?

With the pontoon now open, even more people will be able to enjoy Limehouse Cut — whether they’re dipping a paddle in for the first time, joining a community group, or simply watching canal life unfold.
