For Black History Month, we dropped by the Blossom Project, a local charity bringing people in Tower Hamlets together. From providing day centres and social activities to offering advice and volunteer opportunities, it’s all about connection and community.
We followed Leroy, a local resident and regular at the project, during a recent session to see it in action. He spoke to participants and neighbours at the Blossom Project and what this year’s Black History Month theme, ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’, looks like in our community.
Through these conversations, we learnt that it’s the little things that count – like chatting over lunch, joining in an activity, or volunteering, that make a real difference. The project shows that standing firm in pride isn’t just about big moments, it’s about everyday care, support, and leadership.
Angel, our Marketing and Communications Officer, said:
“As soon as you walk into the Blossom Project space, you can feel the warmth in the room. People are chatting, laughing, and sharing food – it’s the kind of easy, genuine atmosphere that feels like family. Stories are swapped over snacks, and there’s a sense that everyone looks out for each other.”
When Leroy stopped to talk with his friend Floyd, he asked what community means to him. Floyd smiled and said,
“Community is about being helpful to people around you. And when I’m being helpful to people around me, it gives me gratification.”
It’s moments like this that show what standing firm in power and pride really looks like. It’s not just about the big moments we celebrate during Black History Month, but the everyday acts of kindness, care, and connection that make our community.
