Danielle Bishop on the power of housing with a heart

15/12/2025

We believe housing is more than bricks and mortar – it’s about people, families, and communities. Danielle Bishop leads our Housing team with one clear purpose: helping residents feel safe, secure, and part of a community they love.

With almost nine years working in housing, Danielle’s seen first-hand how the right home can completely change a family’s life. Here, she shares what drives her, the moments that stay with her, and why housing with heart matters.

How I came into housing

“I didn’t plan to work in housing at first. I studied law at university and had to do a placement in my third year. Everyone else went off to paid roles in law firms, and I chose to volunteer at Citizens Advice. I worked on everything – housing, benefits, you name it. When I graduated, they offered me a job, and that’s when I began supporting women experiencing domestic abuse. Then I spent years working in the women’s refuges managed by Hestia Housing and Support, helping women  leave dangerous situations and rebuild their lives. That work changed me. I saw how much people needed safe, stable homes, and how hard it could be to access them.

From there, I moved into social housing as a domestic abuse worker, first at Optivo (now Southern Housing) and then here. I became a Safeguarding Manager, Head of Community Safeguarding as a maternity cover, and eventually became Head of Housing. I didn’t set out to work in housing – but once I realised how much it matters to people, I knew it was where I wanted to be.”

Putting people first

“For me, putting people first means remembering we’re all equal. Our services should be guided by what residents tell us they need.

Danielle goes on to say that:

“Listening is everything. Residents live the reality of our homes every day, so they know what works and what doesn’t. When we don’t involve them early – like when a new development is designed without thinking about buggy space, wheelchairs, or day-to-day routines – things go wrong. I’ve learned that people want honesty and effort. They want you to hear them, be real with them, and try your best to make things work. You can’t promise everything, but you can show up, listen, and take action where you can.”

Homes designed around real lives

Every day, Danielle sees how the right home can make a real difference. It’s not just about walls and roofs – it’s about creating spaces that keep families safe and help them feel part of a community.

Take the regeneration at Stroudley Walk as an example:

“We’ve delivered 82 new affordable homes for rent, including autism-friendly and accessible properties. But the numbers don’t matter as much as the people behind them.

There’s the mother who told me she no longer lives in constant anxiety about her autistic child’s safety. No more sleepless nights worrying they might slip out unnoticed or get hurt in an unsafe space. Now, she has a home that meets every need of her family – offering peace of mind and genuine security.

Developments like Stroudley Walk show why affordable housing matters. They help people feel they belong. Playing even a small role in that transformation is inspiring – and it drives us to keep asking: how can we support our residents even more?”

A moment I’ll never forget

“I’ll never forget meeting a resident who had just moved into one of our specially adapted homes,” Danielle says. “She told me how happy and amazed she felt to finally have a home big enough for her whole family – somewhere she could move freely and live independently. It was something she had only ever dreamed of before.

Her words made it clear… this was more than a house. It was dignity, independence, and a fresh start.”

Homes that give families freedom

“The common thread in these stories is freedom. Freedom for families to grow and thrive. Freedom for parents to let go of fear, and for children to feel safe and happy.

That’s the power of a good home – it lifts burdens, unlocks potential, and changes lives forever.

These are the moments we work for. A family stepping into their new home for the first time, children smiling because they finally have their own bedrooms, or a mother with mobility challenges feeling the relief of a bathroom designed for her needs. A home can give dignity, independence, and peace of mind – and that’s why we do what we do.”

Building more than homes

“We all know the daily struggles faced by individuals and families in our community. Many have lived in overcrowded homes, unsuitable spaces, and feared losing their support networks.

But now, these new homes – right here in Bromley-by-Bow, close to the amenities people need – have brought hope, excitement, and a sense of belonging to local families who once doubted they’d ever have a home that truly worked for them.

This is not just about bricks and mortar. It’s about helping people stay in a community they love – and seeing their neighbourhood transformed for the better.”
