Standing together against domestic violence
27/09/2024
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We are raising awareness and offering support. If you or someone you know is experiencing abuse, help is available. You are not alone.
In the Crime Survey for England and Wales, it was estimated that 2.1 million people aged 16 years and over (1.4 million women and 751,000 men) experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2023.
In 2023-24, the Metropolitan Police received 4,519 domestic abuse reports from Tower Hamlets residents.
Safe and supportive housing is important for survivors. Learn more about how we support a violence-free community.
Domestic violence abuse awareness
Domestic abuse isn’t just physical; it can also be emotional, financial, or sexual. It may include controlling behaviour, keeping someone away from friends and family, using threats, or monitoring their use of technology. Abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of gender, age, or background.
Key signs to watch for include:
- being isolated from family and friends
- physical injuries like bruises or burns
- control over finances or access to basic needs
- restrictions on leaving home or attending work/school
- monitoring of communication or internet use
- constant belittling or pressure for unwanted sexual contact
