Driving digital change in our community: Riaz’s story

03/07/2025

If you haven’t met Riaz yet, he’s our Digital Skills Training Officer based at The Hive. Passionate about technology and education, he helps residents across our community build confidence online - from setting up their email accounts to accessing essential services.

Where it all began

As a local East Londoner, Riaz joined us nearly 10 years ago, initially working with young people through employment programmes. With a degree in Computer Science and a love for helping people, he soon started to lead local digital projects.

“Growing up next to Langdon Park, I often saw classes taking place at the centre. I never imagined that one day I would be the one leading them!”

Today, Riaz manages a team of Digital Champions and volunteers, who run one-to-one sessions, host friendly group classes, and spend time out in the community helping more people get connected.

Changing lives through digital skills

Whether helping someone set up online banking or apply for Universal Credit, Riaz and his team tailor their support to each learner.

“It’s not like a traditional classroom. We keep things lively, hands-on, and fun so people feel part of something and take away experiences that stay with them,” he says.

A standout moment for Riaz was when he visited a school and helped give out devices to over 100 parents. Word spread quickly – and demand for digital skills support soared.

Through their ongoing outreach, Riaz and the team have since handed out hundreds more free laptops and helped countless residents get online. They’ve also worked closely with local groups to deliver welcoming, accessible sessions for people with additional needs, boosting both their confidence and independence.

Looking to the future

Even in the face of funding challenges, Riaz remains focused on reaching more people. He’s now bringing courses directly into local spaces, making it easier, and more affordable, for residents to join.

“Sometimes people want to attend the course but are worried about the cost of travel. So, running our sessions close to where they live can make a real difference in enabling more people to take part.”

And what’s next? 3D printing! Riaz has already started showing locals how to design, print, and even sell their creations online. He says:

“When we showed people, they could make and print something for just a few pounds and sell it online, it made them really excited. It’s opened up new ways for them to get creative and even earn a bit of extra money.”
