Finding confidence and a community: Gina’s story

26/01/2026

Have you met Gina? She’s a single mum with two children and a big heart. Life has thrown some challenges her way, and at times it’s been hard for her to feel confident. Gina often felt anxious and found it difficult to join local activities or meet new people – but that’s not the whole story. With support from the Linc Centre, one of our community hubs, Gina began finding her inner strength and a place where she truly belongs.

Gina took the first step

Things began to change when Gina’s son Romaine joined a local pre-school at the Linc Centre,. At first, Gina kept to herself, but over time she started to open up. With gentle encouragement, she agreed to try one of our Wellness Workshops with Della. That first step made a big difference. Gina connected with Della and felt comfortable enough to ask for more support. We helped her speak to her GP and arrange sessions with a psychiatrist.

Trying something new, and loving it

Since then, Gina has discovered activities she really enjoys, including essential oil workshops, candle making, and meditation. She and her children now come along to family events and community activities regularly. It’s been amazing to see her confidence grow and her smile return.

Gina says:

“When staff suggest I try something new, I know I’ll enjoy it as they really take the time to get to know us. They connect us with things that fit our personal situations – and I really appreciate that.”

Support for her family too

Gina also faced a challenge getting extra help for her daughter at school. Through our SEND Parents Support Group at the centre, she learned how to apply for financial support and make sure her daughter got the right help in the classroom.

Gina’s confidence continues to grow

Today, Gina feels more confident and connected to her community than ever. Life still has its challenges – her daughter is growing up, and her dad is living with Alzheimer’s – but we’ll continue offering support.  We want to help Gina maintain strong community ties, and access the right mental health resources so she can keep feeling happy and healthy.

Gina says:

“The Linc Centre is the first place I go if I’m having a bad day and need a friendly face or support with a problem. I have trouble trusting people, but I feel like I can open up there. They’re like extended family now and always try to help.”
